History of Our Remembrance Park
We are extremely pleased to announce that the Remembrance Park has been awarded a $30,000 Barrier Buster Grant from the Access4All Program of the Rick Hansen Foundation. With the participation of the Government of Canada, this “Barrier Buster” grant is a Canada 150 Signature Initiative, through the Rick Hansen Foundation’s Access4All Program and is aimed at breaking down barriers for people living with disabilities. The joint application to the Rick Hansen Foundation was carried out by The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 314 (Manotick) and the Rideau Valley Conservation Foundation. These funds will will help ensure full accessibility for all to our new Park! MANOTICK HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY DONATES! On Feb. 13th, Dr. Dennis Osmond received a cheque for $1000 on behalf of the Manotick Legion from Anne Clark-Stewart, Director of the Manotick Horticultural Society. Also present were Linda Reasbeck, Vice President and Peter Wuppelmann, Treasurer of the Horticultural Society. The monies will go toward the costs of establishing the Manotick Remembrance Park at Dickinson Square. This amount will be matched by the City of Ottawa. Both Dr. Osmond and Anne Clark-Stewart are members of the Manotick Remembrance Park Organizing Committee. STAY TUNED! Work will start in the early spring and the Manotick Remembrance Park will open on Sunday, July 2, 2017! WHAT WILL BE IN THE PARK? We have designed a wonderful Park for residents to enjoy and remember with gratitude, the contributions made by those who have and continue to serve their country. Features of the Manotick Remembrance Park will include:
Garden 1 - Army will include red poppies and other red, white and blue flowers. Garden 2 - Navy will include blue flowers such as blue bell flowers to represent the ship's bell, foam flowers to represent the waves and other blue and white flowers. Garden 3 - Air Force will include white hydrangea to represent the clouds and green-leaf plants to represent the earth below. Garden 4 - Merchant Navy will include blue and white flowers with some yellow flowers. Garden 5 - Peacekeeping Forces will include flowers native to Africa, the Mediterranean and the Middle Eas as well as Afghanistan and China Garden 6 -The Home Front will include native plants from across Canada in a variety of colours. The idea is to provide a patchwork of colour to reflect the industry of those at home who knitted and sewed for the troops.
